Frames

Our upholstery begins with solid beech wood frames, hand-crafted for exceptional durability. We use precision Domino joinery, reinforced corner blocking, and quality screws to create furniture that stands the test of time. Health-conscious by design, we exclusively use 0% VOC glues that eliminate harmful emissions while maintaining superior strength. Our frames are built to withstand the stresses of daily use over decades and can be refreshed with new fabric as needed, ensuring your investment lasts for generations. The result? Suspension options

The real muscle in a quality sofa is the suspension system hidden beneath the cushions. Like a vehicle's shock absorbers or a building's foundation, a sofa's suspension determines both immediate comfort and long-term durability. While cushion materials provide surface softness, it's the suspension that prevents sagging, distributes weight evenly across the frame, and ensures your sofa maintains its shape and support year after year. Woven Sinuous

Our hand-tied sinuous spring approach represents a hybrid construction method that borrows techniques from traditional eight-way hand-tied systems while taking advantage of the space and cost saving efficiency of sinuous springs. It delivers superior performance compared to basic sinuous spring installations while being more economical than full 8-way-hand-tied construction, making it an excellent middle-ground solution for quality upholstered furniture. The knotted jute connections limit lateral movement of the springs, reducing wear on the nail-in clips and preventing the springs from shifting position or distorting over time.

8-Way-Hand-Tied Coils on Slats

Premium 8-way-hand-tied spring suspension delivers exceptional comfort with highly responsive, balanced support while ensuring decades of durability through craftsmanship that maintains its shape. Our use of wood slats to support the springs eliminates sagging or loss of resilience over time. The interconnected spring system distributes weight uniformly across the seating surface, maintaining maintaining responsiveness and consistent comfort.

8-Way-Hand-Tied Floating

Our most elaborate suspension, the 8-way-hand-tied floating spring suspension with formed edgewire cradles your body with responsive, gently bouncy support that never sags, ensuring decades of consistent comfort. This level of masterful craftsmanship gives the seat a lively, buoyant feel that perfectly balances softness and resilience while preventing springs from shifting over time, so the sofa's original comfort level lasts for decades. The redundantly tied springs allow the entire array to distribute weight collectively, reducing wear on any single component.

Frame Preparation

Multiple graduated layers of GOTS organic Merino wool, GOLS organic Dunlop latex, and organic cotton batting mindfully applied to the frame give Ecobalanza pieces a distinctive feel that conforms to the body over time. Initial firmness softens gradually. The padding breathes naturally. While even high-quality commercial organic furniture might have a lifespan of 8 to 15 years, properly maintained heirloom upholstered pieces like ours can last 50+ years with occasional reupholstering and a refresh of the padding. When you sit on our pieces, you experience the difference that traditional craftsmanship makes with this essential but often overlooked detail.

The Edgeroll

Right at the front of every luxury upholstered piece lies an unsung hero: the edgeroll. This meticulously crafted feature provides the perfect balance between support and softness where you need it most. Handcrafted from premium materials and expertly positioned along seating edges, our unique edgeroll--developed in-house to use only materials that meet our radical standard--prevents sagging, maintains crisp lines, and creates that smooth transition from frame to cushion that defines true comfort. Decking

Another vital-yet-overlooked feature of a comfortable sofa, a properly prepared decking creates the perfect support system for your cushions while ensuring you never feel the springs underneath. Our layered approach harmonizes the qualities of Burlap, GOTS Organic cotton batting and a final layer of GOTS Merino wool to create a supportive decking that maintains its shape and comfort for the long haul.

Frame Padding

At Ecobalanza, we believe true comfort comes from thoughtful construction. That's why we pad our entire frame—not just the cushions—creating all-around softness. Our arms receive extra attention with generous application of GOLS-certified organic latex for springy resilience and organic cotton batting for precise shaping.

Hand-Stitched Wool on Frame

The next step is adding a double layer of organic merino wool that's carefully hand-stitched to the latex, wrapping completely around the frame, including the sides and back. This traditional hand-stitching approach eliminates the need for adhesives, creating truly non-toxic comfort.

Reinforced Inside and Out

Unlike mass-produced furniture with flimsy backing, every Ecobalanza Sofa features triple-layer reinforcement on the exterior back, arm and inside arm. We apply jute webbing, burlap, and organic wool to create a resilient structure that:

Tailor cutting fabric

Our master craftsmen cut each fabric piece by hand with special shears, a craft that represents the pinnacle of upholstery expertise.

They visualize the finished piece while cutting, accounting for pattern placement, fabric grain, and how the textile will transform when applied to three-dimensional forms. This exacting approach ensures patterns align perfectly at seams and corners maintain their integrity through years of use. Seat Cushions

From our studio standard Latex & Wool option, fine-tuned to feel great for most bodies based on careful listening to Ecobalanza clients over almost two decades, to our deeply luxurious Latex & Down Wrap option, Ecobalanza seat cushions provide a distinct and exceptional sit. Your cushions can be adjusted by latex density and wrapping material to ensure you get the feel that you want to suit your personal experience of comfort.

GOLS Latex + GOTS Merino Wool

Ingredients: GOLS Latex + GOTS Merino Wool + GOTS Cotton Twill

Our standard loose seat cushion starts with a core of medium density GOLS organic Dunlop Latex, wrapped and handstitched (without the use of adhesives) in two layers of lofty GOTS certified organic Merino Wool, fully-encased in a GOTS certified organic Cotton Twill, and finished in a zippered slipcover of your finishing material. In addition to creating a gentle loft feeling and natural fire retardancy, the wool and fabric insulate and protect the latex from breaking down, ensuring your cushions stay resilient for decades.

Clients are welcome to substitute a core of soft latex for a more soft and sinky sit (great for snuggling and napping) or a core of firm latex to provide support for aging bodies that might be prone to chronic back or joint pain.

GOLS Latex + GOTS Merino wool + RDS Down or Bloom Down

Ingredients: GOLS Latex + GOTS Merino Wool + GOTS Down Ticking + RDS or Bloom Down

Our premium cushion designed to provide cloud-like softness of RDS Down or Bloom Down while the hidden GOLS latex core delivers the proper back support you need, eliminating discomfort even during long sitting sessions. The organic latex core is wrapped in a hand-stitched double layer of organic merino wool to protect it from deterioration and to ensure cushions maintain their perfect shape and support for years to come.

Crafting entirely in the Ecobalanza Studio with a GOTS certified organic cotton down ticking ensures the cushion is perfect for those with sensitivities to synthetic materials.

Hand-Sculpted Latex + Merino Wool

Ingredients: GOLS Latex + GOTS Merino Wool

Hand-sculpted GOLS latex shaped to resemble the lofty look of down wrapped cushions. We developed this technique for those who are looking for a plush look and cozy feel without using down. We add lofty layers of GOTS Merino wool, hand-stitched to the soft GOLS latex layers to complete the look. This gives ultimate comfort and softness–as well as a squishy, cloud-like look to your cushions–without the need to ever fluff.

Traditional Latex-Free

Ingredients: Springs in GOTS Cotton Pockets + GOTS Cotton + GOTS Merino Wool

As a latex alternative, this cushion option is made with Marshall Coil springs individually sewn into in-house crafted GOTS organic cotton pockets, creating a silent and springy core. The coil array is then wrapped in multiple layers of GOTS cotton batting and GOTS Merino wool that are hand-stitched to it. This traditional technique ensures that each coil responds independently to your body’s weight and movement, reducing motion transfer, and staying comfortable for decades to come.

Back Cushions

Back pillows receive much less weight pressure than seat cushions, so for comfortable compression Ecobalanza sofas work with much softer materials to give you a cozy, receptive experience. Since we refuse to work with petroleum-based fibers, our stuffed back pillows will compress with repeated use and require occasional pounding and fluffing to reintroduce air into the internal fibers and refresh the feel of them.

GOTS Wool + Kapok

Ingredients: GOTS Wool + Hand-fluffed Kapok

Our standard back pillow features a GOTS organic Merino wool envelope filled with hand-fluffed kapok–a soft, hair-like natural fiber treasured for centuries that is lightweight, and naturally lofty like down. Encased in a hand-stitched GOTS organic cotton twill cover with scaffolding threads to hold its shape, this cushion offers a soft supportive feel.

Cotton Down Ticking + RDS Down or Bloom Down

Ingredients: GOTS Down Ticking + RDS Down/Bloom Down

Our Down back pillow offers the plush luxury and high resilience of down, blown into chambers of GOTS organic cotton down ticking to fill the back pillow with optimal coziness. Choose from our RDS certified 50/50 feather/down mix or Bloom down, a special 50/50 mix of kapok and recycled hypoallergenic down.

GOLS Latex + GOTS Wool + Down

Ingredients: GOLS Dunlop Latex + GOTS Merino Wool + GOTS Down Ticking + RDS Down/Bloom Down

Our latex and down back pillow starts with a thin core of the softest GOLS organic Dunlop latex available, wrapped in a double layer of hand-stitched GOTS organic Merino wool. We handcraft a down wrap in GOTS organic cotton ticking with multiple chambers filled with RDS Down or Bloom Down. This laborious back pillow provides that initial sink of down with a finishing support of latex that will maintain its structure longer.

GOLS Latex + GOTS Merino Wool

Ingredients: GOLS Dunlop Latex + GOTS Merino Wool + GOTS Cotton Twill

Our GOLS Latex cushion wrapped in a double layer of lofty GOTS Merino wool, hand-stitched onto the latex provides a more structured look and firmer support. Wrapped in a GOTS organic cotton twill cover. Can be made as a wedge back pillow.
